Mechanical Codes Quiz


There is a lot of hearsay and assumption going on out there concerning mechanical codes. It is usually the result of “This is what someone told me” or “That’s the way we have always done it”. Failure to have accurate knowledge and understanding of codes could result in financial losses to contractors as well as creating safety issues.


All of the following questions are based on current editions of codes which are adopted in many jurisdictions. Always consult the codes adopted in your jurisdiction.



  1. A permanent means of access must be provided where equipment is installed

on roofs or structures exceeding  feet.


  1. A 100,000 btu gas furnace and a 40,000 btu gas water heater are located in a basement area that measures 20’x25’x8’. Is there adequate combustion air available from within the space to comply with code requirements?  


  1. When appliances are located in an attic, they can be no more than  feet from the access opening.


  1. Mechanical equipment should not be located within  feet of a roofs edge

unless an approved railing is provided.


  1. The maximum hanger spacing for horizontal PVC pipe is  feet.


  1. Supports for metal ducts must not exceed intervals of  feet.


  1. Appliances located in an attic must have a level service space on the service side of the equipment not less than  inches x  inches.


  1. Fresh air intakes (including economizers) must be a minimum of  feet from building exhaust, flues, and plumbing vents unless such vents extend  feet above the intake opening.


  1. Horizontal vents on condensing furnaces must terminate a minimum of foot above, or  feet below or horizontal from any doors or windows


  1. The volume of a space in which appliances are located is insufficient to provide adequate combustion air. There is sufficient air available from an adjacent space.
