on roofs or structures exceeding 16 feet.

  1. A 100,000 btu gas furnace and a 40,000 btu gas water heater are located in a basement area that measures 20’x25’x8’. Is there adequate combustion air available from within the space to comply with code requirements?

Answer: No, it is not adequate. Equipment in a confined space requires 50 cubic feet of combustion air per 1,000 btuh fired. We have 140,000 btuh. Therefore, we need 7,000 cubic feet of air in the space. The volume of the 20’ x 25’ x 8’ basement is only 4,000 cubic feet.
